Ink?: AR Visualization for Tattoo Consultations
Ink? is a spatial design tool built for a tablet form factor to facilitate real-time studio consultations between tattoo artists and clients. By allowing artists to drop designs onto a live right-hand canvas, scale them, warp them, and view them in immersive AR, the app streamlines tattoo selection and placement.
The Problem Space
The permanence of tattoos creates a high-friction decision process.
For clients, anxiety stems from an inability to accurately visualize how a 2D design will contour to their specific 3D body topography. For professional tattoo artists, misaligned client expectations result in excessive back-and-forth during the consultation phase, eating into valuable chair time.
The Goal
Bridge the imagination gap. Create a high-fidelity visualization tool that empowers clients to make confident decisions and provides artists with a seamless consultation platform.
The Market Gap
Tattoo consultations are highly collaborative, yet artists lack digital tools built specifically for live client collaboration. Currently, artists sketch on paper or show flat designs on screens, which fails to help clients visualize how the artwork will warp and scale on their unique body contours. This gap leads to client hesitation and placement uncertainty.

Target Audience
To prevent feature bloat and ensure a highly focused product, I ruthlessly prioritized a single primary persona for the MVP, while keeping the secondary ecosystem (Tattoo Artists) in mind as the ultimate business benefactors.
The Tattoo Client (The Visualizer)
Profile: Young adults (18–35) who are digitally native and highly visual. They value aesthetic perfection and personal expression.
The Core Problem: The "Imagination Gap." They cannot accurately visualize how a flat, 2D stencil will look when warped around the 3D curves of their body.

A Spatial Workspace for iPad
Instead of standard photo editing, "Ink?" was conceptualized as a spatial design tool built specifically for the tablet form factor.
Split-View Consultation Workspace
A persistent left-hand gallery allows artists and clients to browse flash sheets and instantly drop designs onto the live right-hand canvas without breaking the user flow.
Immersive AR Preview
The interface seamlessly transitions from the split-screen editing mode into a dark, full-screen AR environment, removing all UI distractions so the client can focus entirely on how the tattoo looks on their body.
Dynamic Surface Mapping
Advanced AR tools allowing users to warp, scale, and contour flat vector designs onto curved body parts.
Frictionless Capture & Save
A streamlined modal flow at the end of the journey allows users to quickly save the composite image, making it easy to compare multiple placements during a fast-paced studio consultation.
Information Architecture
The architecture prioritizes a direct path from "Discovery" to "Workspace." The wireframes illustrate a deliberate progression designed to minimize cognitive load:
• Interaction Design: The core workspace mimics professional design tools (like Procreate or Figma). By utilizing a fixed side-panel for assets and maximising the canvas area, the tool feels native to iPad power users.
• Progressive Disclosure: The UI begins with structured asset selection, transitions to a split-screen editing view, and progressively hides the toolbars as the user enters the immersive camera view.
• Touch Gestures: Pinch-to-zoom, two-finger rotation, and multi-point mesh warping allow for precise placement without a steep learning curve.
Visual Identity
The visual identity of "Ink?" was crafted to balance raw tattoo culture with premium software aesthetics.
• Logo Concept: The central motif—a stylized, minimalist human face—symbolizes individuality and the creative essence of tattooing. The iterative design process focused on distilling complex human features into a scalable, recognizable icon.
• Typography: The contemporary typeface "Poller One" was selected for the logomark to echo the bold, artistic character of traditional flash art.
• Color Palette: A strictly minimalist black-and-white color scheme was established. This was a strategic decision to ensure the app's branding never visually competes with the colorful tattoo artwork it hosts.
High-Fidelity Execution
The final high-fidelity screens bring the spatial workspace to life. The UI is designed to be intentionally "invisible"—because the user's skin and the tattoo artwork are highly variable, the interface needed to recede into the background. By utilizing a high-contrast dark theme and clean sans-serif system typography, the app ensures that the color values of the tattoo designs are never distorted by bright interface elements.
Reflections
Designing "Ink?" reinforced the importance of balancing technology with real-world constraints. Prioritizing a professional tool over a casual app kept the architecture lean and focused. Key takeaways included engineering inclusive digital rendering for all skin tones and designing manual fallbacks for when live AR tracking fails. If I were to continue developing this concept, I would have explored Apple Pencil integration and a "healed ink" simulation to further refine the consultation experience.
